Over a career spanning several decades, he established himself through contributions to functional integration and the development of solvable models within the field of theoretical physics.
Academic Foundations and Research Trajectory
Exner completed his initial studies in theoretical physics at Charles University in Prague in 1969, where he subsequently served as an assistant professor. His scholarly path transitioned in 1978 to the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia. Despite the systemic complexities of that era which left him without a formal doctoral advisor, he earned his PhD in 1983 and a higher doctorate in mathematical physics by 1990 while at the same institution.

Take the IQ test →Professional Appointments and Institutional Leadership
Returning to his home country in 1991, he directed a mathematical-physics group at the Nuclear Physics Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. He ascended to the position of professor at Charles University in 2003. Since 2006, he has served as the Scientific Director of the Doppler Institute for Mathematical Physics and Applied Mathematics.
Contributions to Quantum Theory
The research portfolio of Exner focuses primarily on the mathematical underpinnings of quantum theory, specifically investigating unstable systems, resonances, and scattering theory. He is credited with defining the theory of leaky quantum graphs and identifying the existence of curvature-induced states in quantum waveguides. His body of work comprises more than two hundred research papers and several technical books, including volumes on Hilbert-space operators and quantum waveguides.
Professional Service and Recognition
Beyond his individual research, Exner has held leadership roles in several international scientific bodies. Additionally, he presided over the International Association for Mathematical Physics from 2009 to 2011. The scientific community recognized his career achievements with the Neuron Prize for Lifelong Contribution to Science in 2016, and he is a member of Academia Europaea.
