Professional Trajectory
Born in Enschede in 1956, Polman pursued studies at the University of Groningen and the University of Cincinnati. His early career at Procter & Gamble saw him serve as managing director for P&G UK between 1995 and 1998, followed by a role as group president for P&G Europe in 2001. In 2006, he transitioned to Nestlé as chief financial officer, eventually heading their Americas branch by 2008. His move to Unilever marked a significant shift in corporate policy, as he discontinued short-term earnings guidance to prioritize long-term growth and sustainable initiatives.

During his leadership at Unilever, Polman introduced the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan. This initiative aimed to diminish the firm's environmental footprint while expanding social programs. He sought to shift a larger portion of sales toward emerging markets, targeting a 70 percent share. Despite facing criticism from shareholders during 2013 and 2014 when sales targets were missed, he maintained that currency fluctuations and market conditions were the primary drivers, rather than his sustainability-focused strategic direction.
Consultancy and Continued Advocacy
Upon leaving his executive role in 2019, Polman shifted his focus toward climate change and poverty alleviation. He co-founded Imagine World, which collaborated with corporations on development goals until its acquisition by Systemiq in 2022. He remains a board member and major shareholder of Systemiq. Polman also serves as a board member for the Global Compact and as an SDG Advocate. His work includes co-authoring the book Net Positive and advising various international organizations and committees.
