Nineteen individuals attempted a desperate escape from the Isle of Pines on a raft in March 1875, an act that resulted in the drowning death of French physician Paul Philémon Rastoul. His trajectory moved from the classrooms of Montpellier to the center of political turmoil, marking a career defined by the intersection of clinical practice and the radical governance of the 1871 Paris Commune.
Medical Education and Practice
Born in 1835 in Thézan-lès-Béziers, Rastoul pursued his formal medical training at the Faculty of Medicine of Montpellier. He attended this institution from 1855 until 1862. By 1863, he relocated to Paris to establish his medical practice, operating within a French clinical environment that would soon undergo significant transformation due to the advent of antisepsis, germ theory, and advancements in anaesthesia.

During the 1871 Paris Commune, Rastoul integrated his professional background with political service. He secured election to the Commune Council, representing the 10th arrondissement. Within the governing body of the Commune, he held the responsibility for overseeing medical services across the city, coordinating health operations during a period of intense municipal upheaval.
Deportation and Death
Following the collapse of the Commune, authorities arrested and imprisoned Rastoul. The state eventually deported him to New Caledonia in 1873. While in this territory, he gained limited permission to continue practicing medicine. His situation worsened in 1874 following the escape of a group that included Henri Rochefort, which prompted authorities to transfer Rastoul to the Isle of Pines.
