Early Development and Education
Born in Leipzig in 1977, Kalkbrenner spent his youth in the Lichtenberg district of East Berlin. At thirteen, he began playing records despite strict domestic curfews. Alongside his school friend Sascha Funke, he studied techno music, spending years frequenting venues such as E-Werk and Planet. During his formal education, he balanced his growing interest in the techno scene with studies in music theory and trumpet performance. By 1995, he shifted his focus toward production, working for two years in the television industry to finance his musical equipment.

Kalkbrenner met Ellen Allien during her BPitch party events in Berlin. This connection led to his 1999 debut, the "Friedrichshain EP," released under the name Paul dB+. He released two albums, Superimpose and Zeit, in 2001 before shifting his creative focus toward albums as his primary format. His third studio album, Self, released in 2004, introduced a narrative structure to his work. He remained with the BPitch Control label for nearly a decade, producing six albums and ten EPs before his departure in 2008.
Berlin Calling and Commercial Success
In 2006, Kalkbrenner collaborated with director Hannes Stöhr on the film Berlin Calling. Beyond providing the soundtrack, he portrayed the lead character, Ickarus, a role that mirrored aspects of the Berlin electronic music scene. The project moved him to Aix-en-Provence for six months of recording. Following the 2008 release of the film and its associated soundtrack, the project achieved cult status. The film maintained continuous screenings at Berlin’s Kino Central for over 145 weeks, becoming the longest-running film in German history.
Paul Kalkbrenner Musik and Later Projects
Founding his own label, Paul Kalkbrenner Musik, in 2009 allowed for greater artistic autonomy. His 2011 release Icke Wieder reached the number two spot on German music charts, achieving gold status with over 100,000 units sold. His 2015 project, the "Florian Trilogy," served as a precursor to his album 7. Additionally, he released "Back To the Future" in 2016, a three-volume mix series documenting the rise of techno in early 1990s Berlin. In 2025, he released the single "Dreaming On," utilizing a sample from Depeche Mode.
