Research and Contributions

His mathematical research focused on extreme value theory, empirical processes, and nonparametric estimation of tail indices. He also investigated extreme copula and dependence structures. Beyond his technical research, Deheuvels authored several books, including L’Intégrale in 1980, La recherche scientifique in 1990, and Probabilité, Hasard et Incertitude in 2008. He also produced Lectures on Empirical Processes: Theory and Statistical Applications in 2007.

Professional Recognition and Controversies

Deheuvels achieved numerous honors throughout his life, becoming a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics in 1984. In 2000, he was elected to the French Academy of Sciences, and in 2007, he received the Pierre-Simon de Laplace Prize. Later in his career, he became known for his support of the research regarding the Séralini affair, a controversy involving the publication and subsequent retraction of a study by biologist Gilles-Éric Séralini.

Public Engagement and Final Years

In addition to his academic responsibilities, Deheuvels was a radio personality and maintained membership in organizations such as the International Statistical Institute and the Carrefour de l'horloge. He held foreign corresponding membership at the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences of Spain. He died on 30 January 2026, at the age of 77 in Bourg-la-Reine.
