In 2000, Achleitner moved into the insurance sector by joining Allianz SE. As chief financial officer, he managed the company's financial operations and investment strategy for twelve years. During this period, he also engaged in teaching roles, including work at the Vienna University of Economics and Business between 1988 and 1999, and an appointment as an honorary professor at the WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management in 1999.
Deutsche Bank Supervision
Achleitner assumed the chairmanship of the Deutsche Bank supervisory board in 2012. Throughout his tenure, which lasted until 2022, he oversaw the appointments of several chief executives, including Anshu Jain, Jürgen Fitschen, John Cryan, and Christian Sewing. Despite facing removal votes between 2018 and 2020, he maintained the support of major shareholders, including Qatari Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani. In 2019, he purchased shares in the bank worth nearly 1 million euros.
Governance and Advisory Roles
Beyond his primary roles, Achleitner has served on numerous boards, including those for Bayer AG, Henkel AG & Sons, Daimler, and RWE AG.
