Pat Gelsinger transitioned from a rural Pennsylvania upbringing to the upper echelons of the semiconductor industry, beginning his career at Intel in 1979 as a technician. After building a foundational reputation as the lead architect of the i486 processor, he spent decades navigating executive roles at Intel, EMC, and VMware before returning to lead Intel as CEO in 2021.
Early Education and Engineering Beginnings
Raised in Robesonia, Pennsylvania, Gelsinger pursued technical training early in life. He attended the Lincoln Group of Schools, obtaining an associate degree in 1979. He relocated to Silicon Valley the same year, joining Intel as a quality-control technician. While working, he completed his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at Santa Clara University in 1983 and later earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering and computer science from Stanford University in 1985.

Gelsinger became a significant figure in Intel's technical evolution throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He was a member of the design team for the 80386 microprocessor and served as the lead architect for the 80486 processor. By age 32, he was appointed as the youngest vice president in the firm's history. He eventually served as CTO from 2001 to 2009, overseeing developments including USB, Wi-Fi, and the Intel Core and Xeon lines.
Executive Roles and VMware Tenure
In 2009, Gelsinger departed Intel to serve as president and chief operating officer at EMC. In 2012, he transitioned to the role of CEO at VMware. His time outside the company lasted until early 2021, when he was recruited to return to Intel as chief executive officer during a period of market instability and pressure from investor Third Point Management.
Intel Leadership and Departure
Upon returning as CEO in February 2021, Gelsinger implemented an expansion strategy involving multi-billion dollar manufacturing projects in Arizona, New Mexico, Ohio, and Germany. He engaged in efforts to compete with TSMC and Samsung until he stepped down as CEO and from the board of directors on December 1, 2024. Following his exit, he joined the venture capital firm Playground Global and took a leadership role at the messaging platform Gloo.
