Pascal Lamy

Pascal Lamy, born in 1947 in Levallois-Perret, held the position of Director-General of the World Trade Organization for eight years, from 2005 to 2013. His professional trajectory spans high-level roles in French civil service, European commission leadership, and international trade policy, establishing a career defined by strict management and oversight of complex global financial and economic systems.

Formative Years and Early Government Service

Lamy attended Lycée Carnot, HEC Paris, and Sciences Po before graduating from the École nationale d'administration between 1973 and 1975. He joined the Inspection générale des finances and soon held roles within the French government, including work with the Interministerial Committee for the Remodelling of Industrial Structures. By 1981, he served as a technical adviser and later deputy chief of staff to Jacques Delors, then Minister of the Economy and Finance.

European Commission Leadership

When Jacques Delors became President of the European Commission in 1984, Lamy transitioned to the role of chef de cabinet, a position he maintained for a decade. He returned to the public sector in 1999 to serve as the European Commissioner for Trade under Romano Prodi, focusing on trade negotiations and institutional reform until 2004.

World Trade Organization Tenure

Nominated by the European Union, Lamy assumed the role of Director-General of the World Trade Organization on 1 September 2005. He oversaw the organization's trade negotiations and was reappointed for a second four-year term in 2009. His tenure concluded in 2013, during which he acted as chairman of the Trade Negotiations Committee and participated in international governance reviews, including the High Level Commission on the Modernization of World Bank Group Governance.

Advisory Roles and Continued Public Engagement

Following his time at the WTO, Lamy engaged in diverse advisory capacities. He became the inaugural president of the Paris Peace Forum in 2018 and has maintained roles in various non-profit organizations and boards, including Danone and Bosch. In 2019, he joined the Brunswick Group as president for European operations, continuing his involvement in economic and international policy spheres.
