Early Life and Education
Born Teuku Zakaria bin Teuku Nyak Puteh on 22 March 1929 in George Town, Penang, he later adopted the name P. Ramlee by combining his father's name, Puteh, with his school-given name. He attended the Kampung Jawa Malay School, Francis Light English School, and Penang Free School. His education faced interruption during the Japanese occupation from 1942 to 1945, when he attended the Imperial Naval Academy and received musical instruction, learning to read notation and play the violin.

Discovered by director B. S. Rajhans in 1948, Ramlee began his film career in the supporting role of a villain for the film Chinta. By 1950, he transitioned to lead roles, starting with Bakti, where he notably performed his own vocals rather than using a playback singer. His golden age occurred between 1955 and 1964 at Malay Film Productions in Singapore. During this period, he directed critically acclaimed films such as Penarek Becha and the Bujang Lapok comedy series, while composing scores that integrated traditional Malay elements with keroncong and theatrical music.
Transition to Kuala Lumpur and Final Years
In 1964, Ramlee relocated to Kuala Lumpur to collaborate with Merdeka Film Productions. He produced 18 films during this later phase, including his final directorial work, Laksamana Do Re Mi, released in 1972. Despite his previous successes, he encountered professional challenges and diminished industry support during his final years in Malaysia. His last composition was the song Ayer Mata di Kuala Lumpur. On 29 May 1973, he died of a heart attack at age 44 and was interred at the Jalan Ampang Muslim Cemetery.
