Early Career and Education
Born in 1984 in La Marsa, Tunisia, Mellouli moved to France at age 15 to pursue athletic training. He eventually transitioned to higher education, graduating from the University of Southern California in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in computer science. During his time there, he trained with the USC Trojans under head coach Dave Salo and participated as a scholarship holder in the Olympic Solidarity program.

Mellouli established himself as a force in the pool during the 2003 World Championships in Barcelona, earning bronze in the 400-meter individual medley. By the 2004 Athens Games, he placed fifth in the same event, setting an African record. His versatility extended to the 2012 London Olympics, where he became the first person to earn medals in both pool and open-water events at a single Games, claiming gold in the 10km marathon and bronze in the 1500-meter freestyle.
Doping Suspension and Comeback
In 2006, Mellouli tested positive for Adderall during a competition in West Lafayette. The Court of Arbitration for Sport subsequently imposed an 18-month ban, which resulted in the nullification of his 2007 World Championship results, including his gold medal in the 800-meter freestyle. Following the conclusion of his suspension in mid-2008, he returned to competition to win Olympic gold in Beijing.
Final Olympic Appearances
His career spanned six Olympic Games. After missing the podium in Rio 2016, he faced challenges leading up to the 2020 Tokyo Games, which were held in 2021. Despite an initial withdrawal due to a dispute with the Tunisian federation regarding alleged forgery, he ultimately competed and finished 20th in the 10km marathon event.
