Early Professional Life and Whistleblowing
Born in 1974 in Thiès, Sonko pursued higher education at Université Gaston Berger and the National School of Administration of Senegal. He spent 15 years as a tax official in Pikine. In 2016, his professional trajectory changed when he acted as a whistleblower, revealing that a Canadian corporation used offshore tax havens and mineral sands processing plants to evade $8.9 million in taxes. His subsequent termination from the civil service preceded the publication of his 2018 book, Pétrole et gaz au Sénégal, which detailed these findings.

In 2014, Sonko established the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity, known as PASTEF. He served as a member of the National Assembly from 2017 to 2022. During the 2019 presidential election, he secured third place with 16% of the vote, campaigning on a platform to replace the franc with a domestic currency. In 2022, he achieved a local victory by being elected mayor of Ziguinchor, while his Yewwi askan wi coalition captured 56 seats in the national legislature.
Legal Challenges and Imprisonment
Sonko faced a series of complex legal proceedings beginning in 2021 when a massage parlour employee filed a complaint alleging rape and death threats. While he was acquitted of rape in 2023, he received a two-year sentence for corrupting youth. His legal status triggered significant civil unrest, including protests that led to 14 reported deaths. Following his incarceration in 2023, the government dissolved PASTEF and temporarily banned TikTok. He was ultimately released in March 2024 following a court reinstatement of his eligibility.
Premiership and Ideology
Appointed prime minister on 2 April 2024 following the election of Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Sonko defined his administration as a breakaway government intended to initiate systemic transformation. During his premiership, he challenged the French military presence in Senegal and voiced opposition to Western promotion of LGBT rights and monogamy. He also advocated for reforming ECOWAS, citing its internal divisions. His term concluded in May 2026 when President Faye dismissed him from the office.
