Military Service and Formative Years
Born in 1894 in San Martino, Bottecchia emerged from a large, impoverished family. He worked as a shoemaker and bricklayer before the outbreak of the First World War. Serving in the Bersaglieri corps of the Italian army, he utilized his experience with bicycles to deliver messages and supplies across the Austrian front. During this period, he endured a gas attack near the battle of Caporetto in 1917 and successfully escaped after being taken prisoner. His performance as an independent rider in the 1923 Giro d'Italia drew the attention of Henri Pélissier, who recruited him for the Automoto-Hutchinson team. He quickly adapted to the French professional environment, winning a stage of the 1923 Tour de France and wearing the yellow jersey for several days.

In 1924, Bottecchia secured his place in sporting history by winning the first stage of the Tour de France and holding the lead throughout the entire competition. He successfully defended his title in 1925, aided by teammate Lucien Buysse. His physical health began to decline in 1926, and he abandoned the race during a severe storm. Personal tragedy followed, as he lost his younger brother, Giovanni, in a car accident in May 1927.
Unexplained Death
On 3 June 1927, Bottecchia was discovered unconscious on a roadside near Peonis. He had suffered a fractured skull and multiple broken bones, though his bicycle remained undamaged at the scene. He was transported to a hospital in Gemona del Friuli, where he passed away twelve days later on 15 June without regaining consciousness. Official inquiries attributed the death to an accident, yet the lack of physical evidence at the scene fostered persistent speculation.
