Oriol Romeu began his professional journey in the youth ranks of FC Barcelona before establishing a career that spanned top-tier leagues in Spain, England, Germany, and Japan. Throughout his career, he operated as a defensive midfielder, frequently moving between clubs to secure playing time and adapting his tactical role across multiple European environments.
Early Development and La Liga
Born in 1991 in Ulldecona, Spain, Romeu progressed through the youth academy of Barcelona after arriving from Espanyol in 2004. Manager Pep Guardiola introduced him to the senior squad during the 2009 FIFA Club World Cup. He made his competitive debut in August 2010 during a Spanish Supercup match against Sevilla. His La Liga debut followed on 15 May 2011, during a draw against Deportivo La Coruña.
Chelsea and European Loan Spells
In August 2011, Romeu signed a four-year deal with Chelsea for €5 million. He debuted for the London side in September 2011 and made his Champions League appearance against Genk in October. His tenure included a goal in the League Cup against Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2012, but a significant knee injury sidelined him later that year. He subsequently spent time on loan at Valencia and German club VfB Stuttgart.
