Oriol Bohigas

Spanish architect (1925–2021)

The transformation of Barcelona for the 1992 Summer Olympics was driven by a vision that sought to monumentally reconstruct the periphery while functionalizing the city core. Oriol Bohigas, serving as an urban planning delegate, orchestrated the development of La Vila Olímpica del Poblenou, fundamentally altering the urban fabric by reconnecting the city to its coastal border.

Architectural Ideology and Early Resistance

Born in Barcelona in 1925, Bohigas studied at the Escola Tècnica Superior d'Arquitectura de Barcelona, graduating in 1951. By age 20, he emerged as a vocal critic of his city's architecture. His membership in the Grup d'Arquitectes i Tècnics Catalans per al Progrés de l'Arquitectura Contemporània led to condemnation by censors who viewed modern design as politically suspect. In the 1950s, he co-founded the Grupo R, establishing a professional identity defined by a shift from Noucentisme toward rationalism, drawing inspiration from figures like Le Corbusier and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.

Urban Governance and Olympic Redevelopment

Appointed Urban Planning Delegate in 1980 under Mayor Narcís Serra, Bohigas directed municipal efforts to integrate facilities and infrastructure into suburban neighborhoods. His work reached its zenith during the lead-up to the 1992 Summer Olympics. In addition to the Vila Olímpica and the Port Olímpic, he oversaw the Design Museum of Barcelona and the Future Pavilion for the Seville Expo '92. Later, as a city councilor from 1991 to 1994, he focused on large-scale cultural infrastructure, though economic constraints eventually forced his resignation.

Professional Legacy and Management

Bohigas balanced his architectural practice, MBM Arquitectes—which he established with David Mackay and Josep Martorell—with significant roles in cultural and academic management. He was a professor at his alma mater and served as its director from 1977 to 1980. His leadership extended to the Fundació Joan Miró, Ediciones 62, and the Ateneu Barcelonès. Throughout his career, he remained a prolific author, publishing numerous essays and books on architectural typology, history, and urban planning until his death in 2021.
