Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo began his professional career with the Union Bank of Finland before joining the electronics firm Nokia in 1980 as corporate counsel. He subsequently navigated various roles within the company, eventually ascending to the position of president and chief executive officer in 2006, a post he held for four years.
Early Career and Nokia Tenure
After graduating from the University of Helsinki with a master's degree in law, Kallasvuo transitioned through multiple legal and financial positions at Nokia. By 1990, he joined the group executive board. During the 1990s and early 2000s, he oversaw Nokia's business operations in the United States and served as the chief financial officer. Between 2004 and 2005, he managed the Mobile Phones division, setting the stage for his appointment as president and chief operating officer in October 2005.

Kallasvuo replaced Jorma Ollila as CEO on 1 June 2006. During his four-year tenure, the company faced significant challenges in the smartphone market, where its share dropped from 48% to 31%. The firm struggled to keep pace with global competitors such as Apple and Google, hindered by slow platform development and the technical difficulties associated with the Maemo and Meego operating systems. Despite the acquisition of Navteq and the introduction of Nokia Ovi, the company failed to counter the rapid shift toward more modern mobile software environments. On 11 September 2010, the board dismissed him to pursue a different direction.
Board Memberships and Legal Challenges
Beyond his duties at Nokia, Kallasvuo served as a director for the EMC Corporation from 2004 until 2009. In 2012, he was proposed as a board member for TeliaSonera. He later became the chairman of the board for Zenterio AB, a Swedish software company. Following Zenterio's bankruptcy in 2019, he faced legal action in 2020 regarding his tenure as chairman, with a claim involving 44 million Swedish crowns. Currently, he serves as the chairman of the board of Cinia Oy.
