Commanding the Mongol Empire from 1229 until his death in 1241, Ögedei Khan extended the borders established by his father, Genghis Khan. Elected as the second Khagan after a brief regency by his younger brother Tolui, he consolidated military authority while fostering the development of administrative systems to govern his rapidly growing imperial domains.
Military Rise and Succession
Born in 1186 in Khamag Mongol, Ögedei demonstrated early military aptitude during his father's campaigns. His leadership during the siege of Urganch in 1221 proved decisive, leading Genghis Khan to select him as heir over his elder brothers Jochi and Chagatai. Following the death of his father in 1227, Ögedei formally ascended the throne in 1229 during a kurultai at Khödöö Aral.
