Nolberto Solano

Nolberto Albino Solano Todco became the first Peruvian to compete in the Premier League, eventually carving out a reputation as a specialist in dead-ball situations. Born in Callao in 1974, he evolved from a right-back in his youth to a proficient right-winger, capturing public attention both for his professional consistency and his extracurricular pursuits as a salsa musician.

Early Career and Argentinian Stint

Solano launched his professional trajectory at Sporting Cristal in 1992, debuting on 13 April against San Agustín. He was integral to the club's dominance in the mid-1990s, securing championships in 1994, 1995, and 1996, and reaching the 1997 Copa Libertadores final. Later that year, he transferred to Boca Juniors at age 22, joining a squad that included Diego Maradona, who assigned him the nickname Maestrito.

Premier League Tenure

In August 1998, Newcastle United signed Solano for £2.5 million. He debuted against Chelsea on 22 August and played in the 1999 FA Cup final. After a brief period at Aston Villa, where he earned Player of the Year honors in 2005, he returned to Newcastle. His tactical versatility allowed him to drop into the right-back position under Glenn Roeder during the 2006–07 season to cover for team injuries.

International and Coaching Roles

Solano earned 95 caps for Peru between 1994 and 2009. His coaching career began in lower divisions, managing clubs such as Internacional de Toronto, Universitario, and José Gálvez. He subsequently served as assistant manager for the Peruvian national team and head of their Olympic squad. Recently, he has led AFC Eskilstuna and Blyth Spartans, and he currently serves as head coach for the Pakistan national team.
