Furlong found immediate success, finishing sixth in his debut Main Event. Ten years later, in 1999, he secured the championship title and a $1 million prize after defeating a final table that included notable competitors such as Erik Seidel and Huck Seed. Before this, he had established his domestic standing by winning the Irish Poker Open twice, in 1987 and 1989.

Outside of cards and flooring, Furlong engaged in horse racing as both an owner and trainer. A notable moment occurred in March 1991, when his horse, Destriero, secured victory at the Supreme Novices' Hurdle at Cheltenham, resulting in a £1.5 million payout for Furlong.
