Take the IQ test →Rise to Leadership at Sony
Idei managed Sony operations in Europe after returning to the firm. When Norio Ohga selected him to serve as president, the decision proved unexpected within the organization. As a leader, he implemented a major reorganization by reducing the board of directors from 38 members down to 10, favoring a structure that included a higher proportion of outside directors. He became co-CEO in 1998 and assumed the role of sole CEO in 1999. In 2000, he took the title of executive chairman, working alongside Kunitake Andō, who served as president. Following the retirement of Norio Ohga in 2003, Idei became sole chairman and group chief executive officer until his successor, Sir Howard Stringer, assumed the role in June 2005.
Post-Sony Ventures and Board Directorships
Upon his departure from Sony, Idei established his own consulting firm, Quantum Leaps Corporation. His expertise led to board memberships at numerous global entities, including General Motors, Baidu, Yoshimoto Kogyo, Nestlé, Accenture, and Lenovo. He maintained an active role in international business governance until his retirement from the board of Accenture in 2015.
