Early Career and Swedish Success
Born in Valdemarsvik in 1922, Liedholm began his association football career with Valdemarsvik before joining Sleipner in 1942. His move to Norrköping in 1946 marked his ascent to prominence, where he secured two Swedish league titles. His contributions to the national team earned him a gold medal at the 1948 Summer Olympics, facilitating his transfer to AC Milan the following year.

Liedholm debuted for Milan on 11 September 1949. Throughout his tenure, he played 359 matches, scoring 81 goals. He was part of four scudetto-winning teams in 1951, 1955, 1957, and 1959, while also securing the Latin Cup twice. In 1958, he captained the squad to the European Cup Final, where they were defeated by Real Madrid. Beyond his clinical passing, he gained a reputation for disciplined conduct, finishing his Italian career without ever receiving a formal booking.
International Milestones
A key component of the Swedish national team, Liedholm captained the squad during the 1958 World Cup held in Sweden. At 35 years old, he scored the opening goal in the final against Brazil, establishing himself as the oldest player to score in a World Cup Final. Sweden ultimately finished as runners-up in a match that concluded 5–2.
Managerial Innovation
Transitioning to coaching, Liedholm managed several clubs including Verona, Varese, Fiorentina, Milan, and Roma. He led Milan to a league title in 1979 and guided Roma to a championship in 1983.
