Early Training and Canal Work
Born in Långbanshyttan in 1802, Nils Ericson did not receive a formal school education. Under the instruction of his father, Olof Ericsson, he developed skills in mechanical drawing and mapping during the construction of the Göta Canal, where he served as a trainee. His technical aptitude was identified early by the canal's architect, Baltzar von Platen, leading to his status as a cadet of the Swedish Corps of Mechanical Engineers by the age of twelve.

Between 1830 and 1850, he managed significant hydraulic projects, including the construction of the Saimaa Canal and the reconstruction of the Trollhätte Canal. During this period, he also supervised the locks at Slussen in Stockholm.
Development of the Main Lines
Following his appointment to lead the state-owned railway project, Ericson designed the layout for several main lines, including the Western Main Line between Gothenburg and Stockholm and the Southern Main Line toward Malmö. He strategically avoided coastal routes for military security and selected junctions such as Falköping and Katrineholm to facilitate regional connectivity. He resigned from his leadership role in 1862, having seen the initial segments of the system open for public service.
Nobility and Public Recognition
King Oscar I granted Ericson noble status in 1854, after which he used the single-s surname spelling. In 1859, he was elevated to the rank of Friherre, becoming the 403rd individual to reach this titled standing. His professional contributions earned him the Royal Order of the Polar Star, the Royal Order of Vasa, and the Order of St. Olav, alongside membership in the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
