Early Career and Education
Born in 1839 in Cherepovetsky Uyezd, Nikolay Vereshchagin followed an early path into the military. In 1850, he enrolled in the Naval Cadet Corps and eventually reached the rank of lieutenant. During the Crimean War, he participated in military operations in the Gulf of Finland, for which he received a medal. Following his military service, he pivoted to academic pursuits, enrolling in the Faculty of Natural Sciences at St. Petersburg University in 1856.

Seeking to modernize Russian agriculture, Vereshchagin traveled to Switzerland to study production techniques. He worked as an apprentice at a cheese factory in the town of Kopne, near Geneva, gaining hands-on experience in European dairy manufacturing. Upon returning to Russia, he attempted to launch his first cheese factory in the village of Gorodnya. While this initial endeavor did not succeed, it provided the necessary foundation for his later, more expansive work.
Development of Cooperative Factories
Between 1866 and 1868, Vereshchagin successfully established over a dozen artel cheese factories across the Tverskoy and Korchevskoy Uezds. These facilities introduced a cooperative structure to the production process, allowing for greater efficiency and consistent output. His efforts in organizing the dairy sector solidified his reputation as a manager-practitioner, earning him the Order of Saint Anna, 3rd class, for his contributions to industry.
