Nikolay Nenovsky

Bulgarian economist

The Governing Council of the Bulgarian National Bank includes economist Nikolay Nenovsky, a specialist in monetary theory and financial policy. Born in 1963 in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria, he has built a career bridging the gap between rigorous academic inquiry and central banking regulation, spanning multiple international institutions throughout Europe and Asia.

Academic Foundations and Research

Nenovsky completed his education at the Moscow State University Faculty of Economics, graduating with an M.A. in 1989 before earning a Ph.D. from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 1995. His scholarly work focuses on monetary history and the history of economic thought. Since 2012, he has served as a professor of economics at the University of Picardie Jules Verne in France. His broader academic reach includes affiliations with the Laboratoire d'économie d'Orléans and the International Center for Economic Research in Torino.

Central Banking and Policy Contributions

His engagement with national policy began in 1996 when he joined the Bulgarian National Bank Research Department, becoming head of the department in 1997. He served as a member of the Governing Council at the bank from 2002 to 2008 and acted as an adviser to the Minister of Finance from 2008 to 2009. President Rumen Radev reappointed him to the Governing Council of the Bulgarian National Bank in June 2020. Additionally, he advised the President of Bulgaria on economic reports between 2002 and 2008.

Global Academic Engagement

Nenovsky has held numerous visiting professorships, including stints at the University of Paris I – Sorbonne and various institutions in Japan, such as the University of Kyoto and the University of Nagasaki. He contributes to several editorial boards, including the Revue d'économie politique and the Journal of Comparative Economic Studies. He is also a founding member of the Bulgarian Hayek Society and served as vice-president of the Bulgarian Macroeconomic Association.
