Neil Finn

New Zealand musician

The international breakthrough of Crowded House arrived in 1987 with the release of the single "Don't Dream It's Over," a composition that defined the trajectory of New Zealand musician Neil Finn. Transitioning Through Split Enz

Finn joined Split Enz in 1977 following the departure of Phil Judd. His presence facilitated a shift in the band's identity from art rock toward new wave pop. By 1980, he was sharing vocal duties and writing major hits, including "I Got You," which secured international visibility for the group. He remained a central member until the band dissolved in 1984.

Crowded House and Global Recognition

In 1985, Finn formed Crowded House alongside drummer Paul Hester and bassist Nick Seymour. Named after the rental property they occupied while recording in Los Angeles, the band became a commercial success. The 1993 Queen’s Birthday Honours recognised his contributions by appointing him an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. After an initial dissolution in 1996, the band re-formed in 2006.

Collaborative Projects and Solo Endeavours

Beyond his primary band commitments, Finn has pursued a prolific solo career, releasing albums including Try Whistling This and Dizzy Heights. He also collaborated with his brother as the Finn Brothers and participated in the 7 Worlds Collide project. His versatility led to a brief tenure with Fleetwood Mac between 2018 and 2022, underscoring his standing as an adaptable composer and instrumentalist.
