Professional Playing Career
Fomenko was a central figure for Dynamo Kyiv throughout the 1970s. His period at the club coincided with significant international success, including winning the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Super Cup in 1975. Domestically, he claimed multiple Soviet Top League titles in 1974, 1975, and 1977, while also lifting the Soviet Cup in 1974 and 1978. Beyond club football, he represented the Soviet Union in 24 matches and earned a bronze medal at the 1976 Olympic Games.

After graduating from the Higher School of Coaches in Moscow in 1979, Fomenko began his transition to management. He gained early recognition by promoting the Georgian side Guria Lanchkhuti to the Soviet Top League in 1989. His tenure at Dynamo Kyiv in 1993 remains a historical benchmark, notably for his victory over Barcelona during the first leg of the UEFA Champions League, as well as securing the first domestic league and cup double for the club in the post-independence era.
Leading the Ukraine National Team
Appointed head coach of the Ukraine national team on 26 December 2012, Fomenko was tasked with stabilizing the squad. He managed a series of successful qualifying matches for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, though the team ultimately fell to France in the playoffs. He successfully navigated the path to UEFA Euro 2016, making him the second manager in the nation's history to lead the team to a major international tournament. Despite this, the tournament campaign ended in a group-stage exit after losses to Germany and Northern Ireland.
