Early Career and Journalism in Belarus
After graduating from the Minsk Medical Institute, Podolyak worked as a journalist throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. He contributed to outlets such as Narodnaja Vola and Belorusskaya Delovaya Gazeta. By 2004, he served as deputy editor-in-chief of the opposition newspaper Vremya. His residency in Belarus concluded abruptly in June 2004 when state security officers expelled him, alleging that his activities compromised national security.

Upon moving to Ukraine, Podolyak became editor-in-chief of Ukrainska Hazeta in 2005. His tenure was marked by the publication of 'The Last Supper,' an artistic investigation into the 2004 poisoning of presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko. The article implicated figures close to Yushchenko, drawing the attention of the Security Service of Ukraine and the Prosecutor General's Office, who subjected him to extensive questioning regarding his sources.
Political Advisory Roles
Following his editorial work, Podolyak transitioned into strategic consulting. He began freelancing for the internet outlet Obozrevatel in 2006, eventually becoming its editor-in-chief in 2011 while also advising Mykhailo Brodskyy. In April 2020, he joined the Office of the President of Ukraine as an adviser to Andriy Yermak. During the Russian invasion of Ukraine that began in 2022, Podolyak became a primary spokesperson for the Ukrainian delegation in peace negotiations. He participated in initial meetings in Belarus and subsequent diplomatic rounds. His stated requirements for peace include the full withdrawal of Russian forces to pre-24 February positions and robust, legally verified security guarantees. He has repeatedly rejected territorial concessions.
