Mohammad Hatta served as the first vice president of Indonesia from 1945 to 1956, defining the early administration of the nascent republic. Born in 1902 in Bukittinggi, he emerged as a critical figure in the national struggle for independence from the Netherlands, eventually becoming known as The Proclamator for his role in securing the country's sovereignty alongside Sukarno.
Formative Education and Political Awakening
Raised in a prominent Minangkabau family, Hatta pursued his education in Dutch language schools in Padang before moving to Batavia. His political engagement began at sixteen with the Jong Sumatranen Bond. By 1921, he enrolled at Erasmus University Rotterdam, where he studied economics. His time in Europe transformed him from a student into a dedicated anti-colonial activist, as he assumed leadership of the Perhimpoenan Indonesia.

During his tenure as chairman of Perhimpoenan Indonesia from 1926 to 1930, Hatta pivoted the organization toward a non-cooperation policy regarding the Dutch colonial government. He represented Indonesian interests at numerous international forums, including the League Against Imperialism and Colonial Oppression in Brussels. These activities led to his arrest and trial in The Hague, followed by his eventual return to Indonesia in 1932, where he chaired the New PNI to focus on cadre training.
Executive Leadership and Legacy
Upon the declaration of independence, Hatta assumed the office of vice president. His government service included terms as Prime Minister from 1948 to 1950 and Minister of Defence in 1948, as well as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1949 to 1950. He remained an influential, if occasionally dissident, voice until his death in Jakarta in 1980. The government posthumously designated him a National Hero of Indonesia in 2012.
