He participated in the 2006 FIFA World Cup squad and also contributed to the team's success in the 2003 Arabian Gulf Cup. In 2006, Al-Shalhoub reached the final list for the Asian Footballer of the Year award, finishing third behind Khalfan Ibrahim and Bader Al-Mutawa. His individual performance in domestic play was highlighted during the 2009–10 season, when he earned the distinction of Saudi Premier League top goalscorer with 12 goals.
