Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin of Terengganu ascended the throne of his federal state in 1998, later serving a full five-year term as the 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong of Malaysia from 2006 to 2011. Early Education and Career
Born in 1962 in Kuala Terengganu, the Sultan pursued early education locally before attending Geelong Grammar School in Australia. He later earned a B.A. in International Relations from the US International University-Europe in London. His formative professional experience began in 1981 as an Assistant Land Levy Collector. He also served as a State Administrative Officer at the State Economic Planning Unit in Wisma Darul Iman.

Mizan completed military training as a cadet officer at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, finishing his course on 9 December 1983. His elevation to the Terengganu throne occurred in May 1998 following the death of his father, Sultan Mahmud. He subsequently served as the Deputy Yang di-Pertuan Agong before being elected by the Conference of Rulers to serve as the 13th monarch of Malaysia.
The 2008 Menteri Besar Appointment
During his term as the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Mizan became central to a state political dispute in Terengganu. When the federal government recommended Idris Jusoh for the position of Menteri Besar following the 2008 general elections, Mizan exercised his constitutional right to appoint Ahmad Said instead. The impasse was resolved after a meeting at the Istana Negara, where the Prime Minister accepted the appointment.
