Mathieu first gained attention by participating in an annual singing contest in Avignon. After multiple failed attempts, she won the event in 1964 with an Édith Piaf song. This victory led to a televised audition in Paris, where she eventually competed on the program Jeu de la Chance. In 1965, she secured Johnny Stark as her manager, a professional partnership that propelled her to become one of France's most popular singers by 1968.
