At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Mireia Belmonte became the first Spanish woman to win an Olympic gold medal in swimming, claiming victory in the 200-metre butterfly. Born in 1990 in Badalona, she established herself as a versatile competitor across multiple distances, holding former world records in butterfly, individual medley, and freestyle disciplines.

Early Development and Training

Advised to swim by her doctor at age five, Belmonte began her competitive career at Club Natació Badalona. In 2003, she received a scholarship from the Federación Catalana de Natación to train at the High Performance Center in Sant Cugat del Vallès. She gained experience with Club Natació L'Hospitalet for six years before joining Club Natació Sabadell for the 2007/08 season. Her education continued through the Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia, where she combined studies in Business Management with her professional training.

Progression to Elite Competition

Belmonte made an early impact at the 2006 FINA Youth World Championships, securing junior world titles in the 400-metre freestyle and 400-metre individual medley. By 2008, she demonstrated senior-level success, setting a world record of 4:25.06 in the 400-metre individual medley at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Rijeka, Croatia. This performance surpassed the previous record held by Julia Smit.

Olympic and World Achievements

Her Olympic debut occurred at the 2008 Beijing Games. In 2012, she attained two silver medals in London, placing second in the 200-metre butterfly and the 800-metre freestyle. At the 2013 World Aquatics Championships in Barcelona, she earned additional podium finishes, including a bronze in the 200-metre individual medley and silvers in the 200-metre butterfly and 400-metre individual medley. Her career contributions were recognized with the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Sports Merit.
