Mikhail Menshikov

Seventy-eight years of life ended for mathematician Mikhail Menshikov on 1 May 2026. Born in Moscow in 1948, his professional trajectory spanned the academic landscapes of the Soviet Union, Brazil, and university posts in Durham. His contributions to the mathematical sciences focused primarily on probability theory, percolation theory, and the mechanics of random walks.

Academic Formation

Menshikov completed his foundational studies at Lomonosov Moscow State University. His academic progression followed the Soviet system, where he attained the Candidate of Sciences degree in 1976. By 1988, he had secured his Doctor of Sciences qualification. His formative schooling took place in Kharkov, located within the Ukrainian SSR.

Career Progression

Following his early work in Zhukovsky, Menshikov held a long-term position at Moscow State University. His later career involved international appointments, including a tenure at the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science at the University of São Paulo during 2007. He eventually joined the faculty at Durham University, where he remained a professor until his death.
