Academic Formation
Popa completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Bucharest in 1996. He continued his training at the University of California, Los Angeles, for the 1996-1997 academic year. In 2001, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, where he authored a thesis titled Linear Series on Moduli Spaces of Vector Bundles on Curves under the guidance of Robert Lazarsfeld.

Following his doctoral work, Popa served as a Benjamin Peirce Assistant Professor at Harvard University from 2001 to 2005. He transitioned to an assistant professorship at the University of Chicago from 2005 until 2007. In 2007, he joined the University of Illinois at Chicago, advancing to the rank of full professor in 2011. He later joined the faculty at Northwestern University in 2014 before returning to Harvard University as a professor in 2020.
Professional Distinctions
Popa has received multiple honors throughout his career. He was an AMS Centennial Fellow from 2005 to 2007, a Sloan Research Fellow from 2007 to 2009, and a Simons Fellow from 2015 to 2016. In 2015, he was elected as a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. Furthermore, he serves as an honorary member of the Institute of Mathematics of the Romanian Academy and appeared as an Invited Speaker at the 2018 International Congress of Mathematicians in Rio de Janeiro.
