The publication of The Time of the Tribes in 1988 shifted academic focus toward the postmodern paradigm, cementing a legacy built upon the study of community links and the prevalence of the imaginary in everyday life. Michel Maffesoli, born in 1944 in Graissessac, France, has spent his career examining how social subjectivity and urban nomadism shape human interaction.
Academic Foundation and Early Influence
Maffesoli completed his education at the Université des sciences sociales de Grenoble and the University of Strasbourg. Early in his development, he studied under Gilbert Durand and Julien Freund. By 1972, he served as co-director of the ESU urban sociology research team in Grenoble. In 1978, he became a teaching assistant to Freund, a conservative political theorist, and subsequently directed the Institute of Polemology, which influenced his later focus on the founding conflict and the role of myth as a driver of disorder.

In 1982, Maffesoli co-founded the Centre d'études sur l'actuel et le quotidien (CEAQ) alongside Georges Balandier at Paris Descartes University. He maintained leadership of a doctoral seminar at this institution until his retirement in 2012. Throughout his tenure, he held positions at the University of Paris and became a member of the Institut Universitaire de France in 2008. His scholarly editorial work includes directing the journals Cahiers Européens de l'imaginaire and Sociétés.
The Teissier Controversy
Maffesoli faced significant professional scrutiny in 2001 after supervising the doctoral thesis of astrologer Élizabeth Teissier. The defense of this work regarding the social reception of astrology triggered widespread criticism from sociologists and scientists, including four Nobel Prize winners who protested the awarding of the degree. Critics argued that the thesis lacked scientific validity, leading to debates concerning methodology and the legitimacy of his academic approach to sensitive thinking.
Honours and International Recognition
His research has earned him several distinctions, including the Grand Prix des Sciences de l'Académie Française in 1992 for his book La transfiguration du politique. He holds the status of Knight of the Legion of Honour since 2003, as well as the titles of Officer of the National Order of Merit, Knight of the Order of Agricultural Merit, and Knight of the French Order of Academic Palms. He is an honorary doctor of the University of Bucharest and remains a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
