Early Career and Olympic Success
Born in 1979 in Liptovský Mikuláš, Martikán began international competition in 1994. By age 16, he was the youngest winner of a World Cup slalom event. His 1996 Olympic performance involved a tactical second run that surpassed the score set by the defending champion, Lukáš Pollert. He continued his Olympic momentum in 2000 and 2004, securing silver medals in both instances, and reclaimed the top podium position at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Martikán maintained a streak of individual C1 medals at World Championships from 1995 to 2010. His total career count stands at 23 World Championship medals, comprising 15 golds, 3 silvers, and 5 bronzes. Beyond individual events, he contributed to 11 European Championship gold medals in the C1 team category. He also secured the overall World Cup title on five separate occasions.
Legal Issues and Presidential Pardon
In November 1997, Martikán was involved in a fatal vehicle accident near Velké Zálužie. Investigation revealed he was traveling above the speed limit when his car struck a pedestrian. While facing potential incarceration due to probation violations, President Rudolf Schuster granted him a presidential pardon. The action removed the conviction from his criminal record, drawing criticism regarding the handling of the case for a prominent athlete.
