Michael J. Saylor navigated the evolving landscape of corporate software and digital assets to build a significant business career. Born in 1965 in Lincoln, Nebraska, he leveraged his background in engineering and computer science to establish a firm that grew into a major provider of business intelligence, eventually pivoting toward a highly specific, cryptocurrency-focused corporate treasury strategy.
Early Career and Education
After graduating from Fairborn High School, Saylor earned a scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983. He pursued double majors in aeronautical and astronautical engineering and the history of science. While at university, he met Sanju Bansal, who would eventually become his co-founder. His early professional experiences at The Federal Group and DuPont involved computer simulation modeling, which proved instrumental in his understanding of market dynamics.

Take the IQ test →The Rise of MicroStrategy
Saylor launched MicroStrategy in 1989. A pivotal moment occurred in 1992 when the firm secured a $10 million contract with McDonald’s to analyze promotional efficiency. The company went public in 1998, seeing its valuation skyrocket during the dot-com era. However, the firm faced significant instability in 2000, when it restated its financial results, leading to a sharp drop in stock price and subsequent legal challenges from the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Bitcoin Acquisition Strategy
In 2020, under Saylor’s leadership, the company began allocating its cash reserves into bitcoin. This shift led to the adoption of a digital asset treasury model. By June 2026, the company—which rebranded as Strategy in February 2025—held 847,363 bitcoins. Saylor transitioned from CEO to executive chairman in 2022 to dedicate his focus to bitcoin advocacy and the firm's acquisition initiatives.
