Michael J. Fox

Michael J. Fox navigated a prolific career as a film and television performer after moving from Canada to Los Angeles in 1979. Known for his work in the Back to the Future trilogy and the sitcom Family Ties, he transitioned from a child actor into a global presence in mainstream American entertainment over four decades.

Early Career and Television Breakthrough

Born in 1961 in Edmonton, Fox attended Widdifield Secondary School and Burnaby Central Secondary School. He began his professional acting work as a teenager in the Canadian television series Leo and Me. After moving to the United States, he gained prominence for his portrayal of Alex P. Keaton on the NBC sitcom Family Ties, which ran from 1982 to 1989. His performance on the show earned him Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series in 1986 and 1987.

Film Stardom and Back to the Future

In 1985, Fox secured the role of Marty McFly in the film Back to the Future, a production that achieved significant commercial success. His filmography expanded throughout the late 1980s and 1990s with appearances in Teen Wolf, The Secret of My Success, Casualties of War, Doc Hollywood, and The Frighteners. Beyond live-action roles, he served as a voice actor for projects including the Stuart Little film series and Atlantis: The Lost Empire.

Advocacy and Later Recognition

Following a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease, Fox became an advocate for research into a cure. In 2000, he founded The Michael J. Fox Foundation to assist in funding these efforts. His contributions to the industry and his advocacy work were recognized with several honors, including the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2022 and a lifetime achievement award in 2023. Additionally, he received a Grammy Award for Best Audio Book, Narration & Storytelling Recording in 2010.
