Academic Career at TU Wien
Drmota completed his PhD under the guidance of Robert F. Tichy in 1986. By 1990, he had earned his habilitation at the same institution. He currently holds the position of full professor within the Institute of Discrete Mathematics and Geometry. His leadership roles at the university included serving as the head of the institute from 2004 until 2012. Additionally, he fulfilled the role of dean for the Faculty of Mathematics and Geoinformation between 2013 and 2019.

His primary research interests encompass number theory, enumerative combinatorics, stochastic processes, and the analysis of algorithms. His body of work includes the 1997 publication Sequences, Discrepancies and Applications, co-authored with Robert F. Tichy, and the 2009 text Random Trees: An Interplay Between Combinatorics and Probability. Beyond his primary employer, Drmota has held visiting professorships at the University of Provence, UVSQ, and the University Paris VI.
Professional Recognition
Drmota has received several accolades for his contributions to the field. In 1992, the Austrian Academy of Sciences awarded him the Edmund und Rosa Hlawka-Preis. He was subsequently honored with the Prize of the Austrian Mathematical Society in 1996. He served as the president of the Austrian Mathematical Society from 2010 to 2013. Since 2013, he has served as a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and was the recipient of the Flajolet Lecture Prize in 2023.
