Background and Academic Training
Born in London in 1969 to father Moshe Arad, a former Israeli ambassador to the United States and Mexico, Michael Arad spent nine years of his youth living in Jerusalem. He attended the Hebrew University Secondary School and served in a Golani Brigade commando unit during his military service. His formal architectural training took place in the United States, where he earned a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College followed by a master's degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology's College of Architecture.

Arad relocated to New York City in 1999. His initial professional years included a three-year tenure at the firm Kohn Pedersen Fox, succeeded by a brief period at Leclere Associate Architects. By the time he entered the competition for the World Trade Center memorial, he was employed by the New York City Housing Authority, where his responsibilities included the design of facilities for the New York City Police Department.
Development of the Memorial Design
The finalized memorial design incorporates a plaza at street level featuring cobblestones, moss, grass, and eastern white pine trees, realized in collaboration with landscape architect Peter Walker. A key component of the site involves the interment of unidentified human remains 70 feet underground at the North Tower footprint. Although the proposal faced criticism regarding its stark aesthetic and an initial budget estimate of $1 billion, Arad presented a revised iteration to address these concerns.
Current Professional Status
Arad maintains a dual professional identity as an architect and sculptor. He is a member of the Mayoral Advisory Commission on City Art, Monuments, and Markers. Currently, he practices at Handel Architects, a firm with operational bases in both New York and San Francisco.
