Nielsen’s art school before enrolling at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1871, though he departed the institution in 1875 without finishing his degree.

Following an invitation from fellow student Karl Madsen, Ancher arrived in the northern fishing village of Skagen in 1874. He became a fixture of the Skagen Painters, a group that met regularly at Brøndums Hotel to share techniques. In 1880, he married Anna Brøndum, a local painter whose father owned the hotel. The couple settled permanently in the region, eventually residing in a house on Markvej that was later transformed into the Anchers Hus museum.
Artistic Style and Recognition
Ancher synthesized the strict compositional discipline learned at the Academy with the naturalistic focus on light and atmosphere he adopted during his life in Skagen. His works, such as The Lifeboat is Taken through the Dunes, Christmas Day 1900, and Art Judges, garnered significant institutional praise. He received the Eckersberg Medal in 1887, the Thorvaldsen Medal in 1896, and was made a Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog.
