Maximiliano Rubén Rodríguez, known as La Fiera, began his professional trajectory at Newell's Old Boys before spending the majority of his career in Spain. An Argentine international for 11 years, he operated primarily as a winger, represented his country in three World Cups, and maintained a professional career that spanned from 1999 until his final retirement in 2021.
Early Career and Move to Spain
Born in Rosario, Santa Fe, in 1981, Rodríguez developed through the youth system at Newell's Old Boys. By March 2002, he negotiated a move to RCD Espanyol. Despite legal complications involving the club president Eduardo López, the deal finalized for 5 million euros. His La Liga debut occurred in September against Real Madrid. By his final campaign with the Catalans, he recorded 15 goals, including a hat-trick against Real Betis and a decisive goal against Real Madrid.
Tenure at Atlético Madrid
In 2005, Rodríguez transferred to Atlético Madrid for a 5 million euro fee. He served as the club captain following the departure of Fernando Torres. While he provided consistent production, a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury significantly hampered his availability during his second year. In November 2009, he displayed his finishing capability by scoring four goals against UD Marbella in a Copa del Rey fixture.

Rodríguez joined Liverpool on a free transfer in January 2010. During his stint in England, he registered notable performances, including hat-tricks against Birmingham City and Fulham in the 2010–11 season. He also contributed to the club's 2011–12 League Cup success, netting goals against Chelsea in both the quarter-finals and the league. He departed for Newell's Old Boys in 2012, concluding his time in England with 73 official appearances.
International Representation and Later Years
Rodríguez earned 57 caps for Argentina and participated in three World Cups, reaching the final in 2014. Earlier, he secured the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship on home soil. After spells at Uruguayan club Peñarol and a return to Newell's, he retired in November 2021 following a match against Club Atlético Banfield.
