Early Career and Training
Born in Hamburg in 1867 to Moritz Warburg and Charlotte Oppenheim, he was part of a prominent banking family. His professional training took place in Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Paris, and London before he ascended to lead the family firm. As the head of the Hamburg-based bank, he held an influential position in German finance. His responsibilities included advising Kaiser Wilhelm II in the period preceding World War I. He also served as a member of the Hamburg Parliament, engaging in politics alongside his financial leadership. His influence extended to art patronage and broader economic interests.
Navigating the Nazi Era
The political climate of the 1930s impacted his operations significantly. Between 1933 and the later years of the decade, he served on the board of the German Reichsbank under governor Hjalmar Schacht. Despite attempts to maintain stability, the implementation of the 1935 Nuremberg Laws and the subsequent Aryanization campaign compelled him to divest his interests in the bank.
Migration and Later Years
In 1938, he emigrated to the United States. During his time in Germany, he married Alice Magnus in 1899, with whom he had four daughters and one son, Eric Warburg. His later life was spent in the United States, where he held citizenship alongside his German background. He died in New York City in 1946.
