Matúš Vallo secured the office of Mayor of Bratislava in 2018 with 36.5 percent of the vote, subsequently winning re-election in 2022 with 60.2 percent support. Academic and Professional Background
Vallo attended secondary school in Rome before focusing on architecture. He completed his undergraduate studies at the Faculty of Architecture at the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava in 2004. Later, as a Fulbright scholar, he studied at Columbia University between 2010 and 2011. There, he participated in the City Interventions project at the Columbia Laboratory for Architectural Broadcasting.

Entering the 2018 local elections as an independent, Vallo campaigned with a group of experts known as Team Vallo. This team produced a foundational document titled Plán Bratislava, outlining strategies for improving city living standards. His campaign prioritized administrative transparency and improved communication between the city council and its residents, ultimately defeating opponents such as Ivo Nesrovnal and Václav Mika.
Urban Development and Infrastructure
As mayor, Vallo established the Metropolitan Institute of Bratislava to standardize public space design. His administration overhauled the city's planning permission review process, rejecting projects that failed to meet established requirements. He also implemented the Živé miesta scheme, a 14.3 million euro initiative focused on upgrading more than 25 public areas, including sites at Žilinská, Dunajská, and the area beneath SNP Bridge.
Sustainability and Public Space Projects
The Živé námestie project unified three central squares—SNP Square, Velvet Revolution Square, and Kamenné Námestie—into a 35,000 square meter pedestrian-priority zone. Beyond these squares, the city committed to planting 10,000 trees to mitigate urban heat and improve air quality. Vallo also signed the Pact of Free Cities on behalf of Bratislava alongside other Visegrád Group capitals.
