Mats Sundin became the first European-born player selected first overall in an NHL entry draft when the Quebec Nordiques drafted him in 1989. Early Career and Quebec Nordiques
Born in 1971 in the Bromma city district, Sundin began his path in the Swedish second-tier Allsvenskan with Nacka HK. He later joined Djurgårdens IF, winning the Le Mat Trophy. Following his draft selection, he debuted with the Quebec Nordiques in the 1990–91 season. His breakout occurred during the 1992–93 campaign, when he recorded a 30-game points streak, a feat no other player has matched since. By the end of his tenure in Quebec, he had emerged as a premier young talent in the league.

Acquired by the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 1994 trade, Sundin spent the majority of his career in Ontario. After the 1994–95 lockout, he returned to the ice, leading the team in scoring. During his tenure, he led the Maple Leafs to the Eastern Conference Finals twice, in 1999 and 2002. In 2006, he became the first Swedish player to reach 500 NHL goals. His consistency was marked by seventeen consecutive 20-goal seasons and being the team's leading scorer in almost every season he played for the franchise.
International Success and Retirement
Sundin represented Sweden on the global stage, earning three gold medals at the World Championships. He served as team captain for Sweden's gold-medal run at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. Following a final season with the Vancouver Canucks in 2008–09, he announced his retirement on 30 September 2009. His career concluded with 1,349 points in 1,346 NHL games. In 2012, he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, later becoming the Senior Executive Advisor for Hockey Operations for the Maple Leafs in May 2026.
