Literary Beginnings and Development
Unt pursued studies in literature, journalism, and philology at the University of Tartu. Following his initial success with teenage fiction, he authored a sequence of four novels that solidified his standing among contemporary Estonian writers. These included The Debt in 1964, On the Possibility of Life in Space in 1967, The Moon like the Outgoing Sun in 1971, and The Black Motorcyclist in 1976. He later expanded his reach into English-speaking markets with translations such as Things in the Night, Diary of a Blood Donor, and Brecht at Night.

The creative efforts of Unt significantly influenced the direction of Estonian performance arts. He directed productions at the Vanemuine Theatre from 1966 until 1972. Subsequently, he moved to the Youth Theatre, where he remained until 1991. He finished his institutional tenure at the Estonian Drama Theatre in 2003, transitioning into a career as a freelance writer. His work was pivotal in introducing avant-garde techniques to the regional stage during the post-Soviet transition.
Public Recognition and Final Years
Unt joined the Estonian Writers' Union in 1966 and received the Friedebert Tuglas short story award a decade later. In 1978, he earned the Yearly prize of the Endowment of Literature by the Cultural Endowment of Estonia. By 1980, he was named an Honoured Writer of the Estonian SSR and participated in the Letter of 40 intellectuals. The Estonian government bestowed the Order of the White Star, 3rd Class, upon him in 2000. Shortly before he died in 2005, he held a professorship of liberal arts at the University of Tartu. He is buried at Metsakalmistu in Tallinn.
