The Powder Tower in Prague stands as a representative gate of the Old Town, serving as one of the most significant works overseen by Matěj Rejsek. Starting in 1478, Rejsek managed the construction and executed intricate sandstone decorations, marking a notable contribution to the city's late Gothic architectural landscape during the fifteenth century.
Early Life and Education
Born in 1450 in Prostějov, Moravia, Rejsek received his initial education at the Augustinian monastery's local school. He subsequently relocated to Prague to attend the Faculty of Arts at Charles University. By 1469, he had achieved the status of bachelor and transitioned into an academic role, serving as both rector and teacher at the parish school of the Church of Our Lady before Týn.

Before his shift to Kutná Hora, Rejsek designed residential houses in Prague. His technical repertoire included carving and masonry, skills he applied to significant ecclesiastical commissions. These included a marble tomb for Bishop Jan Rokycana in 1470 and a funeral baldachin for Bishop Augustine Lucian of Mirandola, both situated within the Church of Our Lady before Týn. These works established his reputation as a skilled sculptor and builder.
Contributions to St. Barbara's Church
In 1489, Rejsek moved to Kutná Hora to lead construction efforts at St. Barbara's Church. His primary focus involved developing the outer supporting system, the triforium, and the interior vaulting. Under his supervision, the net vault of the presbytery reached completion in 1499. He remained involved with the project until his death in 1506, leaving a substantial imprint on the church's structural evolution.
Later Works and Legacy
Rejsek’s portfolio extended to liturgical furnishings, including pulpits for the St. Lawrence Church in Kaňk and a site in Rakovník, both dated to 1504. Historical attribution also links him to the stone fountain in Kutná Hora from 1495 and the Bruncvík statue formerly located on the Charles Bridge. Following his death on 1 July 1506, he was interred within St. Barbara’s Church.
