Martin Eberhard initiated his career in electrical engineering by designing the WY-30 ASCII computer terminal at Wyse Technology. This early hardware experience provided a technical foundation for his subsequent ventures, including the co-founding of Tesla Motors in 2003, where he served as the original chief executive officer until his departure in 2007.
Foundations and Early Ventures
Raised in the Berkeley Hills community of Kensington, California, Eberhard attended York Community High School. He earned his Bachelor of Science in computer engineering in 1982 and a Master of Science in electrical engineering in 1984 from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His professional path began at Wyse Technology before he moved to co-found Network Computing Devices in 1987. During his tenure there, he served as chief engineer through the company's 1992 initial public offering. In 1996, he partnered with Marc Tarpenning to launch NuvoMedia. This company developed the Rocket eBook, an early device for secure digital content delivery, which was eventually acquired by Gemstar in 2000.

Eberhard’s interest in electric vehicles stemmed from concerns regarding oil dependency and global warming. After discovering the AC Propulsion tzero prototype, he provided technical and financial assistance for its conversion to lithium-ion battery technology. When efforts to convince founder Alan Cocconi to shift the tzero into mass production failed, Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning established Tesla Motors in Menlo Park, California. The duo identified a specific market opportunity among affluent suburban residents who utilized the Toyota Prius for environmental signaling but desired the prestige and performance of luxury vehicles from brands such as Porsche or Lexus.
Strategic Philosophy and Departure
Central to Eberhard’s strategy was the principle that electric cars should not represent a compromise in quality or performance. He prioritized lithium-ion battery technology as the primary catalyst for achieving viable driving ranges. During his leadership, Tesla developed the Founder's Series Roadster. In late 2007, Eberhard transitioned to the company's advisory board following discussions with chairman Elon Musk. By 2009, Eberhard filed a lawsuit against Musk alleging libel, slander, and breach of contract, though the case was dropped later that year following an undisclosed settlement.
Post-Tesla Engineering Endeavours
Following his exit from Tesla, Eberhard engaged in various automotive engineering projects. In 2010, he confirmed consultancy work with Volkswagen. In 2016, he founded the startup inEVit to supply electric drivetrains to original equipment manufacturers. This entity was acquired by SF Motors, now known as Seres, in 2017, where Eberhard served as chief innovation officer until 2018. Subsequently, in 2019, he founded Tiveni to focus on intelligent battery systems. In 2015, he was inducted into the University of Illinois Engineering Hall of Fame, and in 2025, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering.
