Martha Stewart made history in 2024 by becoming the oldest woman to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue at age 81. Early Development and Education

Born in 1941 in Jersey City, Martha Helen Kostyra spent her childhood in Nutley, New Jersey. She was active in school activities and began modeling as a teenager, appearing in national commercials for Unilever and Chanel to support her education. She attended Barnard College of Columbia University, graduating with a double major in history and architectural history after marrying Andrew Stewart in 1961.

Founding a Hospitality Business

After working as a stockbroker in 1967, she moved to a farmhouse in Westport, Connecticut. She established a catering business in 1976. Following the success of her inaugural book, Entertaining, published in 1982, she expanded into a series of instructional titles including Martha Stewart's Quick Cook and Weddings. These projects solidified her reputation as a voice in home and lifestyle content.

Media Expansion and Corporate Ownership

In 1990, she partnered with Time Publishing Ventures to launch the magazine Martha Stewart Living. By 2002, circulation exceeded two million copies. She followed this by launching a television program of the same name in 1993, which ran for over a decade. Her company, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, eventually encompassed diverse media and merchandising divisions before being acquired by Sequential Brands in 2015.

Legal Challenges and Professional Rebound

Stewart faced significant legal challenges related to the ImClone stock trading case. She served five months in federal prison for fraud, concluding her term in March 2005. Despite industry speculation regarding the survival of her brand, she executed a comeback campaign. By 2006, her business returned to profitability, and she resumed leadership roles, serving again as chairwoman of her namesake company in 2012.
