Hughes started his professional career in 1976 at Seyforth Laboratories. Over three years, he became one of the firm's top 100 earners. Following the closure of Seyforth, he transitioned to Golden Youth, a company specializing in exercise equipment and diet goods. When that entity ceased operations, he pivoted to launching his own business venture in the weight-management sector.
Regulatory Disputes
During the mid-1980s, Herbalife faced legal scrutiny from the Food and Drug Administration, the California attorney general, and the state Department of Health. Authorities alleged the company employed misleading medicinal claims and operated an endless chain marketing scheme. In 1985, Hughes defended his business practices before a U.S. Senate subcommittee. The following year, he settled the dispute by paying $850,000, which was recorded as the largest settlement of its kind at that time.
Philanthropy and Final Years
In 1994, Hughes and his wife Suzan launched the Herbalife Family Foundation to support nutritional initiatives for children at risk and provide disaster relief. Hughes married four times between 1979 and 1999. He died at his Malibu residence on May 21, 2000, at age 44. An autopsy revealed a toxic combination of alcohol and the antidepressant doxepin.
