Born in Sedgefield in 1966, Mark Gatiss has built a career spanning television, film, and theatre through his work as an actor, screenwriter, and author. Early Career and The League of Gentlemen
Gatiss met collaborators Reece Shearsmith, Steve Pemberton, and Jeremy Dyson at Bretton Hall College. This partnership formed the sketch comedy group The League of Gentlemen, which gained recognition by winning the Perrier Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 1997. The troupe transitioned to BBC Radio 4 before launching their television series on BBC Two in 1999, which subsequently earned a British Academy Television Award.

The creative partnership between Gatiss and Steven Moffat resulted in several major television projects. Gatiss co-created the series Sherlock, airing from 2010 to 2017, in which he also portrayed the character Mycroft Holmes. The pair later collaborated on the 2020 BBC and Netflix miniseries Dracula, with Gatiss portraying Frank Renfield.
